| Making 2-Stitch Decreases in One Row Using One Color |
To maintain the integrity of brioche
stitch, decreases should be worked
in pairs of stitches. Depending on the
look you want, the decreases can slant
to the right or left.
For shaping armholes and necklines
in sweaters, most knitwear designers
will work symmetrical decreases - a
left-slant decrease a few stitches in
from one selvedge and a right-slant |
decrease a few stitches before the
other selvedge.
To begin, designate or mark a ‘column’
of knit stitches on the right side (public
side) of the work for placement of
the decrease. This will be referred to
as the marked stitch or column. The
marked stitch sits on top of the other
stitches involved in a decrease. |

brk3tog = (bark 3 stitches together):
work in pattern to two stitches before
marked stitch (the marked st is the
third st), brk2tog (this will involve a
single st and a st with a yo - 3 loops),
return this st to left needle and pass
the marked st (st with its yo - 2 loops)
over, place this st on right needle —
2 stitches dec’d. This places the last
of the three stitches involved (the
marked st) on top and slants to the
right. |
brsskpsso: work to marked stitch, slip
the next two stitches (the marked st
with its yo and the next single st - 3
loops) knitwise (one at a time) onto
right needle, brk the foll st, then pass
the two slipped stitches over. 2 stitches
dec’d. This places the first (the marked
st) of the three stitches involved on
top and slants to the left. |

2-Stitch Decreases Spread Over Several Rows Using One Color |
3row/2st decrease using one color
These decreases are spread out over
3 rows which eases it into the work
nicely. I use this decrease more than a
decrease worked over one row. |

Right-Slant 3row/2st Decrease
Use this on RS at left edge.
1st RS row: Work to 2 sts before
marked column st, brssk, brk1
(marked st), cont in patt - 1 st dec’d;
2 ‘brk’ sts next to each other.
WS row: Work in patt to double sts,
yf sl2yo by bringing yarn to front under
needle, slip the 2 sts p’wise, yarn over
needle to back (1 yo crosses over 2
sts), cont in patt.
Foll RS row: Work to double sts with
their shared yo, brk2tog, cont in patt
- 1 st dec’d this row. |
Left Slant 3Row/2st Decrease
Use this on RS at right edge.
1st RS row: Work to marked column
st, brk1 (the marked st), brk2tog (this
will be three loops), cont in patt - 1 st
dec’d; 2 ‘brk’ sts next to each other.
WS row: Work in patt to double sts,
work a yf sl2yo by bringing yarn to
front under needle, slip the 2 sts
p’wise, yarn over needle to back (1 yo
crosses over 2 sts), cont in patt.
Foll RS row: Work to double MC sts,
brssk under yo (allowing yo to slip off
after working st), cont in patt - 1 st
dec’d this row. |
