It was necessary to create new
terminology and abbreviations for
the brioche stitch. Thoughout this
site and in my patterns I have used
the definitions as described in this
terminology/abbreviations page.

Terminology specific to one pattern will
be defined within that pattern and will
not be found on this page.

Brioche Stitch Terminology and Abbreviations

brk (brioche knit - also known as a
bark)
= knit the stitch (that was
slipped in the row before) together
with its yarnover.

brp (brioche purl - also known as
a burp)
= purl the stitch (that was
slipped in the row before) together
with its yarn over

yf sl1yo (yarn forward, slip 1
purlwise, yarnover)
= bring the
working yarn under the needle to the
front of the work, slip the next stitch
purlwise, then bring the yarn over the
needle (and over the slipped stitch)
to the back in position to work the
following stitch; this slipped stitch/
yarnover is considered 1 stitch.

sl1yof (slip 1, yarnover, yarn to
front)
= used when working a burp
row. Leaving the working yarn in front,
slip the next stitch purlwise, then bring
the yarn over the needle (and over the
slipped stitch) back to the front and
under the needle in position to purl the
following stitch.

marked stitch = refers to a
designated ‘column’ of knit stitches on
the right side (public side) of the work
for placement an increase or decrease.

k1yok1 (knit 1, yarnover, knit 1) =
a 2-stitch increase, made as follows:
knit 1, yarnover (yarn forward under
needle then over needle to back),
then knit 1 into same stitch.

brkyobrk (bark 1, yarnover, bark
1)
= a 2-stitch increase, made as
follows: brk1, yarnover (yarn forward
under needle then over needle to
back), then brk1 into same stitch.

yf sl2yo (yarn forward, slip 2
purlwise, yarnover)
= bring the
working yarn under the needle to
the front of the work, slip the next 2
stitches purlwise, then bring the yarn
over the needle (and over the slipped
stitches) to the back in position to
work the following stitch.

brssk (slip, slip, bark the slipped
sts tog)
= a 1-stitch decrease. Slip
two stitches knitwise - since a stitch
and its yarnover are considered one
stitch, this could mean that you slip
three loops (2 sts), one at a time, onto
the right needle. Then insert the point
of left needle from behind into the two
slipped stitches to hold them in place
while you knit them together with the
right needle. One stitch is decreased.
OR
If you have two stitches hanging under
one yarnover, go under the yarnover,
slip two stitches knitwise, one at a
time, onto the right needle. Then
insert the point of left needle from
behind into the two slipped stitches
to hold them in place while you knit
them together with the right needle,
allowing yo to slip off after working st.
One stitch is decreased.
This decrease slants to the left.

brsskpsso (slip, slip, bark 1,
pass slipped sts over)
= a 2-stitch
decrease. Work to marked stitch, slip
the next two stitches (the marked st
with its yo and the next single st - 3
loops) knitwise (one at a time) onto
right needle, brk the foll st, then pass
the two slipped stitches over. 2 stitches
dec’d. This places the first (the marked
st) of the three stitches involved on
top and slants to the left.

brk2tog (bark 2 stitches together)
= a 1-stitch decrease. Since a stitch
and its yarnover are considered one
stitch, this could mean that you have
three loops (2 sts) hanging on the
needle, knit them together. One stitch
is decreased.
OR
If you have two stitches hanging under
one yarnover, go under the yarnover
and knit the two stitches together.
One stitch is decreased.
This decrease slants to the right.

brk3tog (bark 3 stitches together)
= a 2-stitch decrease. Work in pattern
to two stitches before marked stitch
(the marked st is the third st), brk2tog
(this will involve a single st and a st
with a yo - 3 loops), return this st to
left needle and pass the marked st (st
with its yo - 2 loops) over, place this st
on right needle — 2 stitches dec’d.
This places the last of the three stitches involved (the marked st) on top and
slants to the right.
